The Trail
The Rokeby Hills Bushland Reserve, on the outskirts of Hobart, offers a mix of walking options through suburban-edged dry sclerophyll forests. The suggested easy 6.5km return trail follows the ridgeline of the reserve and is also known as the Droughty Trail. However, there are a plethora of trails to explore.
The Droughty Trail begins from Mayfair Court, Howrah, just off the South Arm Highway and heads into the sheoak woodlands of the Kuynah Reserve via a well-formed fire trail. Small blue-painted arrows on trees indicate the main ridgeline track. This main trail is wide and well-formed throughout the majority of the walk.
Shortly after leaving the sheoak woods, the trail heads along the hill’s eastern side via an undulating trail. Views across Rokeby are achieved as the trail passes a water tank covered in an array of impressive artworks. A Mad Max-inspired car graveyard is also passed before the trail returns to more pleasant bushland scrub.
From here, the trail continues south through bushland with some brief undulating sections. Eventually, the Droughty Hills end is reached, and simple views across the hill, Rokeby Beach and Ralphs Bay are achieved. Returning to the trailhead from the Droughty Hills end, take the lower section of the track to complete a small loop. Occasional views of kunanyi/Mount Wellington across the Derwent River are seen throughout this section.
Getting There
| View Google Map Directions | From Hobart, head over the Tasman Bridge staying in the right-hand lane. After 6km take the turn off to the left and merge onto Flagstaff Gully Link/South Arm Highway (B33). Continue on South Arm Highway for 4.5km before turning right onto Oceana Drive. 100m later, Turn left onto Holland Court, right onto Monaco Place and left onto Mayfair Court. The Rokeby Hills trail begins from the end of the Court. |
